Friday, August 25^th.

We got off to a bit of a slow start and didn't leave London till after ten, but we got to downtown Cardiff by 1:30. We found a parking spot and a nice little cafe to have lunch and then walked to Cardiff Castle. We spent about three hours there, exploring and listening to the provided headset tour guide and we also took a guided tour of the residence.

Cardiff Castle started out as a Roman fort in the first century and has been here for two thousand years. The Normans took it over, there were medieval knights here and eventually it was bought by the Bute family who had made their fortune in coal mining. They owned it for about two hundred years and added most of the residence which they only used for about two months a year, as they had other residences. Eventually, after the second World War, they gave it to the city of Cardiff.

Then we walked around the old city centre, the pedestrian mall section of the High Street, and the Cardiff Market. We sat and enjoyed a beer at an outside bar and then walked through an arcade where John bought his mother and sister birthday presents for next week.

We got back to the car and drove about a half hour out of the city to Sully where John's friends own a house that they generously are letting us use.

We had a simple supper and did some work on our computers before retiring.
